Meet Andy
Andy came to CAL following a recent separation from his husband.
He was seeking advice on their housing options, financial situation, and next steps as he considers living independently.
We provided clear and practical guidance to help him understand his options and plan for the future. This included advice on housing rights, as well as realistic options for securing alternative accommodation through private renting, the housing register, and local housing support schemes. We did explain the limitations of social housing availability while ensuring he had the tools and information to take the next steps confidently.
We supported Andy to understand his financial position following separation. To ensure he was aware of how to maintain financial stability when he moved out we advised on making a new Universal Credit claim as a single person, including the housing element to help with rent, and the possibility of additional support such as a Discretionary Housing Payment.
In addition, we explained the potential liabilities for council tax and household bills following separation, helping to avoid unexpected debts. Andy was supported to understand the importance of reporting changes in circumstances and how this may affect his responsibilities.
Finally, we signposted Andy to specialist organisations for legal and emotional support, ensuring he had access to further help if needed.
Overall, our advice empowered Andy to make informed decisions about leaving his current situation, equipping him with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to move forward independently and securely.
